Premalu 2 seems to be in trouble. The sequel to the 2024 hit Malayalam rom-com has reportedly been shelved, at least that's what lead actor Naslen has hinted. The news has left its fans disappointed who were eagerly waiting to step back into the charming world of the Girish AD directorial. Premalu has been produced by Bhavana Studios, Fahadh Faasil and Friends, and Working Class Hero. The movie, also stars Mamitha Baiju as female lead. Others in the cast are Sangeeth Prathap, Akhila Bhargavan, Shyam Mohan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Mathew Thomas and Althaf Salim. Soon after it emerged a hit, and the announcement of a sequel generated a lot of hype. But it now future of Premalu 2 looks bleak.Premalu (2024) turned out to be a blockbuster surprise.
The romantic comedy is set in Hyderabad, and received praise for its element of humour, fresh performances and realistic portrayal of modern relationships which ensured it connected with the younger audiences. It was not just a box office success for Kerala crossing the Rs 100 crore mark but also a cultural phenomenon.
Premalu 2 shelved?
Given the movie's commercial success, its sequel was announced amid excitement. But in the ensuing months, updates on the project were few and far between. Rumours began to circulate about delays and producer Dileesh Pothan later hinted that the sequel may not happen after all.Now, Naslen has further elaborated on the situation. The actor recently revealed in an interview with Club FM that Premalu 2 has been put on hold for now as the team could not come up with a script they were happy with. "Premalu 2 has officially been cancelled. Dileesh ettan has already spoken about it. Due to certain technical reasons, the project did not reach a perfect landing. Maybe it could happen in the future. But as of now, it has been cancelled.The project was stopped because the script did not achieve the required perfection," he said.
Future of sequel looks bleak
The statement confirms that the sequel is not currently being actively pursued, but Naslen also left the door open for the future. But if the team eventually developed a better script and the right creative direction, the project could be revisited, he said.Premalu is a coming of age story that follows the life of Sachin (Naslen), a graduate from Kerala, who plans on moving to the United Kingdom but fails and instead goes to Hyderabad, to take a GATE course, where he meets Reenu (Mamitha Baiju), whom he falls in love with.
