Deadline, the legacy sequel earned $101.8 million in its first week in the US and $222.2 million globally. For its second weekend, it is trailing another sequel,
Mortal Kombat II, which opened on Friday, May 8. However, the largely female audience for
The Devil Wears Prada 2 is returning to see the film multiple times, which could rise on Mother's Day and earn around $40 to $50 million in its second weekend. In addition to the worldwide earnings, on May 9, the sequel will also beat the first film's entire 124.7 million domestic run in just 9 days.
Director Frankel, screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna and the main cast of Streep, Hathaway, Blunt and Tucci all waited for the right time to make the sequel. According to a report in
Variety, Streep, Hathaway, and Blunt all earned
$12.5 million each as part of a “favoured nations” deal for their fees. It also means that the trio could earn significant bonuses thanks to the milestones the sequel keeps breaking. The first film, which is said to have been made on a budget of $35 million, ended up grossing $326 million globally. Meanwhile, the sequel's budget was more than double at $100 million, which the director shared was spent largely on the cast.
