Ex-Tesla
AI leader and OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy has joined Anthropic, adding another big name to the fast-growing AI race. This move comes at a time when big tech giants are competing with each other to lead AI development and offer powerful AI agents. Karpathy took to X on Tuesday and announced that he was excited to return to research and development. His switch to Anthropic can help the Claude maker to compete with rivals like OpenAI and Google.
Here’s What Karpathy Said
Karpathy wrote on X, “Personal update: I've joined Anthropic. I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative. I am very excited to join the team here and get back to R&D. I remain deeply passionate about education and plan to resume my work on it in time.”
A Key Name In The AI Industry
Karpathy is one of the most influential researchers in the field of AI. He was among the earliest members of OpenAI who joined Tesla later and helped Musk with the self-driving and AI projects. He was closely associated with the development of Autopilot tech and advanced computer vision systems required in electric vehicles. He left Tesla in 2022 but remained active in the AI community through online teaching and discussion on the future of AI.
Karpathy’s Warning About the AI Divide
Apart from the technical work, Karpathy has been known for speaking about the growing divide between people who use AI tools and those who are sceptical about them. He has warned that both groups often ‘speak past each other’ because they interpret and
understand AI in very different contexts. He also popularised the term ‘vibe coding’, believing that the gap is not only about opinions but also about access and understanding. His move to join Anthropic shows how top AI talent is becoming more intense as companies are racing to make the next generation of AI systems.
