Stranger
Things Season 5 might not have been the endgame for Jonathan Byers and Nancy Wheeler, but it surely gave the beloved couple, who parted ways towards the climactic arc of the Netflix series, closure to their romance, paving the way for a better friendship. Played by real-life couple actors Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer, respectively, their characters, Jonathan and Nancy, are now confirmed alumni of New York University and Emerson College, where they aspired to study during the course of the story. Infact, the alumni associations of the two educational institutions have put a stamp on their "former students" in an adorable social media shoutout.
Jonathan, Nancy's relationship arc in Stranger Things finale
In the last shot of the 40-minute epilogue of its episode 8 titled
The Rightside Up, Nancy and Jonathan are seen drinking with Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley. Sitting on the terrace of WSQK (Squawk), the four look back at how they faced life plagued by Vecna's curse, fighting and growing up together from teenagers to young adults, and moving on to different cities. They share updates about their lives, where the names of the two colleges pop up.
Shout-out from alumni associations of colleges
Soon after
Stranger Things marked its finale with the release of its last chapter on New Year's Eve, the Instagram handles of NYU Alumni and Emerson Alumni Association posted about Jonathan and Nancy.
NYU Alumni's post for Jonathan Byers
NYU Alumni posted an edited photo of Jonathan in the backdrop of a street around the university. The caption was written as a profile of a student who studied there, calling out Jonathan to attend the "35th anniversary of his graduation." An excerpt of the text read, "Do any #NYUAlumni know Jonathan Byers from the NYU Class of 1991? We’re hoping to get in touch ahead of the 35th anniversary of his graduation this year! Byers studied filmmaking at NYU in the late ’80s and early ’90s, setting out to bring a long-held creative dream to life: an anti-capitalist cannibal movie—“The Consumer.”"It added, "If you know Jonathan, or have any updates on where he is or what he’s working on, we’d love to hear from you. Jonathan—if you’re out there, we hope you’ll join us for NYU Alumni & Families Weekend this fall!"
Emerson Alumni Association praises Nancy Wheeler for saving the world
Meanwhile, a similar trend was seen for Nancy too. The Emerson Alumni Association posted an edit of her with the text "Nancy Wheeler '19 Helped Saved The World In 1987." The caption read, "From the newsroom to the Upside Down! We’re celebrating the legendary Nancy Wheeler ’19. While her Emerson journey began in the late '80s, she took a break to pursue journalism—and it's just been revealed that she reportedly helped save the world in Hawkins, Indiana in 1987. Nancy, with that relentless Emersonian spirit, eventually returned to finish her degree in 2019. Thanks for seeking the truth and saving the world, Nancy!"Though the two alumini profiles aren't verified, they did add a splash of nostalgia, cementing how every character of Stranger Things has managed to leave a mark in the minds of the audience.
