The
87-year-old British actor John Francis Nolan has died on April 11. While the news of the British veteran's death was not made public, the local newspaper Stratford-Upon-Avon Herald confirmed his demise. Nolan had a storied career working on stage, TV and the big screen. His most famous roles came in his nephews' projects, as the veteran was known for his turns in the Batman trilogy and the TV drama Person of Interest. The superhero trilogy was helmed by his nephew,Christopher Nolan, while the CBS series was created by his other nephew Jonathan Nolan. Christopher and Jonathan’s late father, Brendan Nolan, was John's elder brother.
John Nolan: early life and career
The actor was born in London on May 22, 1938 and started out as a theatre actor. He trained at the Drama Centre London and one of his early roles on stage was as Romeo opposite Francesca Annis at Richmond Theatre. After joining the Royal Shakespeare Company, he acted in the plays
Julius Caesar and
The Merry Wives of Windsor. He also joined the National Theatre under director Trevor Nunn. The thespian also co-wrote and played the title role in a Dostoyevsky trilogy for the Bristol New Vic company in 1980 to 1981.
In the 1970s he gained notice with his TV roles in the BBC miniseries
Daniel Deronda, Doomwatch, The Prisoner, Silent Witness and
Return of the Saint. After his nephew Christopher made his Hollywood debut with
Following in 1998, the actor was a regular in most of his projects.

In the
Batman films, John essayed the role of Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks in
Batman Begins (2005) and
The Dark Knight Rises (2012). He also had a small role in Christopher's war film
Dunkirk, which was released in 2017. His most famous role was in
Person of Interest as John Greer, the mysterious, arrogant former MI6 agent. Greer is also the director of operations for Decima Technologies and runs Samaritan AI. His character was the main antagonist of the show after being introduced in the second season of the show. His last role was in the 2024 HBO Max series
Dune: Prophecy, where he played Speaker of the High Council in an episode of the sci-fi prequel series. Nolan is survived by his wife, actress Kim Hartman, and their two children, Miranda and Tom; and his grandchildren, Dylan and Kara.
