Karuppu,
starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, faced a shocking turn of events on the release day, May 14. Despite special permissions for early morning shows in Tamil Nadu, last-minute cancellations and booking issues threw the launch into chaos. Adding to the turmoil, the film was unexpectedly screened in Mumbai, Pune, and Varanasi, sparking outrage as clips circulated online. The producers addressed the incident, calling it a serious mistake and breach of trust, which undermined the film's potential. They also highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by filmmakers in India’s competitive industry.
Karuppu producers' association on unauthorised screenings
During a media interaction, T Siva, the Secretary of the Tamil Film Actors Producers Association along with producer SR Prabhu directly addressed the unauthorised screenings of
Karuppu in Mumbai, Pune, and Varanasi. Siva expressed sadness and shared that he was extremely shocked after seeing many fans calling and sharing videos of the film being played there. The producers and everyone involved were also deeply shocked when the screenings began. Soon after, clips from the film started getting cut and circulated online, we immediately got in touch to find out who was responsible. He said that the screenings were stopped, and they themselves identified the theatres where this happened.
Siva further added, "And as soon as they were informed, they had to call up Qube Technologies and ask them to take it down." He said that
Karuppu carried huge expectations and had the potential to go far globally but now the trust has been broken, which is extremely painful. The producers' association is taking a firm stand so that such incidents never happen again in the future. They have also given their explanation, and we have officially registered our condemnation.T Siva expressed that the film, made on a budget of Rs 40 crore, deserved a proper release, and it was unfortunate that it was screened in the manner it was. He also noted that the team was worried, recalling the leak issue with Vijay's film
Jana Nayagan, and feared that a similar situation could have happened with
Karuppu. For the unversed, the unreleased Tamil film
Jana Nayagan, starring Vijay, was leaked online in April 2026, leading to major controversy, arrests, and police investigation.
