Perfect
Crown released to positive reactions on April 10 across the globe. While fans cannot get enough of the chemistry between IU and Byeon Woo-Seok, the K-drama's unique plot and political intrigue are taking stakes higher even with the critics. Perfect Crown, which was previously titled 21st Century Grand Prince's Wife, is an MBC production and is currently streaming on Disney+ outside South Korea. However, one country where the show still isn't playing is India. While desi fans are stepping up demand to the makers to release the show on this side of the continent, the plan still seems to be far from reality.
Indian fans are disappointed
As Indian fans continue to post angry and disappointing reactions on social media, given the unavailability of
Perfect Crown in the country, this isn't the first time a Korean show, or for that matter an international show, hasn't arrived here. So, why is Perfect Crown not streaming on any OTT in India?
Perfect Crown not released in India - Why?
The single reply is licensing. Shows made outside the country are streamed in India on OTT platforms through direct licensing, strategic partnerships, and simultaneous global releases. OTT biggies like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and JioHotstar secure regional rights based on popularity, censorship clearance, and cost recovery of the show. Thus, they often opt for dubbed or subtitled versions to attain maximum viewership.
How do OTT platforms decide which K-dramas to stream?
Since the regional branch of the OTT platforms do not automatically own global content, buying streaming rights for specific regions (like India) becomes crucial. These platforms then sign deals with studios for projects from, say, Hollywood, South Korea, and more. Sometimes deals are even directly made with broadcasters like tvN, JTBC, HBO, and others. Since content is licensed territory-by-territory, if one K-drama does not release in India, there might be a situation where another title might release here, but not in another country due to different licensing. It has been noted that Netflix and Amazon Prime use international content to attract premium subscribers. However, things are different with Disney+ Hotstar, which relies on partnerships with studios like HBO/Disney. Now, since Disney+ Hotstar in November 2024, merged with Reliance Industries' Viacom18 to form a new entity, JioHotstar, the platform was rebranded, signaling a shift away from the standalone Disney-branded streaming service in India.
Would Perfect Crown release in India at all?
For a show like Perfect Crown, to attain a go-ahead in India, it will now need to pass the licensing process from scratch. This depends on the genres being watched by Indians, along with the process of dubbing international content in regional languages (Hindi, Tamil, Telugu). Even though Disney+ Hotstar lost a significant subscriber count when it turned into JioHotstar, the process remains the same.
Fans plead for the show to release in India
Whether or not Perfect Crown will release in India at all is yet to be confirmed by the makers or any OTT channel, but the frustration is mounting among the audience, who are reacting via social media. A user wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "IU is charming as always in Perfect Crown. We request @JioHotstar @DisneyPlus to release this much-awaited drama in India soon. Perfect Crown is set to be one of 2026’s biggest & best K-dramas, already streaming worldwide on Disney+ Hotstar" Another one said, "From trending worldwide to unavailable locally. Despite a global Disney+ launch, Perfect Crown has no India streaming yet. How long will fans have to wait?"In the past, we also had Disney+ K-dramas like Tempest, Our Movie, Nine Puzzles, and Knock Off. Other notable shows like King The Land and See You In My 19th Life were also delayed on Netflix India due to localisation issues.
