After
seven years, Amazon Prime Video is finally saying goodbye to the superhero satire series The Boys. The eighth episode of the fifth and final season will be released on May 18, but according to the showrunner Eric Kripke, who also developed the series, one key character won't be a part of the finale. The streaming service also released a finale poster that hints at something fans have known all along, a showdown between Homelander (Antony Starr) and Butcher (Karl Urban). But here's what Kripke said about Soldier Boy's fate, which is a bit puzzling.
The Boys showrunner reveals Soldier Boy will miss finale
In an interview with
Collider, Kripke, who has worked with Soldier Boy actor Jensen Ackles on his long-running show
Supernatural, spoke about including a reference to their show in
The Boys. One of the character's lines was about working on a Ford car; however, during filming, they changed it to an Impala, which was used on the CW show
Supernatural.
The filmmaker accidentally (or not) revealed that Soldier Boy won't be there in the series finale. He shared, "Knowing that that was going to be Jensen's last scene in the series, we wanted to put in one last reference." This means fans already know the fate of the fan favourite character. The actor is headlining the prequel series,
Vought Rising, which premieres in 2027 on Amazon Prime Video. The character of Ben, aka Soldier Boy, was introduced in Season 3. He's Vought's original premier superhero who also happens to be the Homelander's father. For the penultimate episode titled
The Frenchman, the Female, and the Man Called Mother's Milk, after Homelander (Starr) has acquired the V1 that will give him immortality, he sets about making himself the 'God' of the US and kills the American president for not being a true believer. As Soldier Boy comes to tell him that he's off to Bogota, Colombia, to spend the rest of his life while Homelander continues his plans for world domination, the spoiled superhero snaps.
After being abandoned by his son Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), Homelander fears being left behind by his father as well. He grabs Soldier Boy as he is leaving and chokes him out. Homelander puts his father back in stasis, like a doll he can look at whenever he wants.
