singer Asha Bhosle passed away today (April 12) due to multiple organ failure, as per Dr Pratit Samdani of Breach Candy Hospital. She was 92. She had been admitted to the hospital on Saturday evening due to a chest infection and extreme exhaustion. Her funeral will be held on April 13 at Shivaji Park at 4 pm. Bhosle’s demise indeed left everyone in deep sorrow, as many people, celebrities and politicians have started paying tributes to the veteran singer on social media. Asha Bhosle was married to musician RD Burman until his demise in 1994. Their love story is nothing but an immortal musical romance.
Asha Bhosle’s First Marriage
Asha Bhosle started her singing career at the age of 10. When she was 16, she got married to 31-year-old Ganpatrao Bhosle against her family’s wish. At that time, he was her personal secretary. After marriage, her husband and in-law reportedly started mistreating her. After a few years, Asha left her husband and went back to her maternal home with two children while pregnant with her third child. They eventually got separated in 1960. After separation, Asha raised her three children single-handedly and focused on her musical career. She established herself as one of the leading female playback singers in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.
Meeting With RD Burman
During her stint, she met a budding musician, Rahul Dev Burman, aka RD Burman. They collaborated for several iconic songs and music albums in the 70s and 80s. Their relationship extended beyond the recording studio.
Pancham Da was quite impressed by Asha Bhosle’s versatility, as she could sing any kind of song, right from jazz to cabaret music. Asha's and Rahul’s relationship was initially opposed by his mother.
Second Marriage With RD Burman
It has to be noted that Rahul Dev Burman was earlier married to Rita Patel. However, they got divorced in 1971. Since it was the second marriage for both of them, they took time to understand each other before tying the knot in 1980. RD Burman was 6 years younger than Asha Bhosle. After marriage, Asha Bhosle simultaneously managed her household duties and singing career. She kept on collaborating with RD Burman and other musical maestros in the 80s, such as Shiv Hari, Bappi Lahiri and so on.
Asha and RD would set major couple goals for others. They always supported each other during their highs and lows. Pancham Da was also a fan of Asha ji’s cooking skills. He would often call his friends from the industry, and Bhosle would love to serve them food cooked by her.
In 1994, RD Burman passed away before the release of his last film, 1942 – A Love Story. His songs were loved by everyone. After his demise, Asha Bosle continued working in the music industry. She would often remember Pancham Da during several interviews. Their love story remained immortal.
