The situation has now taken a significant turn, with production house KVN Productions deciding to refund all distributor advances and take complete charge of the film's release. KVN Productions To Refund Distributors

KVN Productions business head Mohan Suprith confirmed the decision and told SCREEN, "We felt it was unfair to keep them in the loop while we are still waiting for a possible release date."Reportedly, Thalapathy Vijay himself instructed the production house to proceed with the refunds to avoid further complications. KVN Productions will now release the film entirely on its own once all legal and certification issues are resolved.This move is extremely rare for a major star vehicle, as theatrical agreements had already been finalised.

What Does It Mean For The Film?

Vijay has advised KVN Productions to retain the theatrical rights and release Jana Nayagan independently once a release date is finalised. This gives the makers full control over the release strategy, including screens, timing, and marketing.KVN Productions is already under financial pressure, with close to Rs 1,000 crore locked in delayed projects, including Jana Nayagan and Yash's Toxic.The non-theatrical rights deal has also been cancelled. A fresh agreement will only be made once the censor certificate is officially issued.

Why Is Jana Nayagan Not Releasing?

The film's original release date of January 9 was missed due to an unresolved dispute over its CBFC rating. The board's regional panel had initially recommended a UA 16+ certificate, but the final clearance was delayed.KVN Productions had approached the Madras High Court to expedite the certification process, but on January 9 itself, a division bench stayed the single judge's order.In February 2026, the producers withdrew their writ petition and resubmitted the film through the CBFC's standard process. Despite the Revising Committee screening the film, no certificate has been issued yet and the release date remains officially unannounced.Distributors worldwide are estimated to have suffered losses of around Rs 200 crore, primarily from interest payments on finances committed to the film. Theatre owners also faced difficulties during Pongal 2026, as no other January release could compensate for Jana Nayagan's absence.Overseas partners had to return around Rs 8 crore from advance bookings when the January release was cancelled. The film also suffered a post-production leak, adding to the production house's troubles.
