Director RJ Balaji's Karuppu, starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan finally released in theatres on May 15 following unwarranted delays. Earlier, despite receiving permission for 9am shows from the Vijay's Tamil Nadu government, several theatres could not screen the film as planned. However, despite temporary setbacks, Karuppu managed to roar into theatres, minting over Rs 15 crore on its opening day. Overseas, the film grossed a total of Rs 4 crore, pushing its earnings to around Rs 22 crore. Now, director RJ Balaji has issued a statement, showing his gratitude to fans as well as sharing a 'gentle request'.Taking to X, formerly Twitter, RJ Balaji shared a note, where he addressed the audience, thanking "every single one" who "walked into theatres and embraced
Karuppu." He further wrote, "The love you've shown this film has been overwhelming, and beyond anything we imagined when we set out to make it."
The director further went on to recount how he is hearing stories from across Tamil Nadu and beyond of "audiences cheering, weeping", and in many cases getting so "deeply moved that they are experiences "something far greater than cinema." According to the director, "Some have felt divine intervention within the theatre itself". Balaji further wrote that to them, that wsa the "highest blessing" their film could have received.The director also had a "heartfelt request", where he urged audiences that if they find themselves seated near to someone who appears to have been touched by "divine energy" during a screening, "please be kind." He further urged them to inform theatre staff so that they can be cared for with dignity. According to Balaji, "A moment of compassion from a strange is, in itself, a sacred act." Balaji further requested theatre partners and exhibitors across Tamil Nadu to keep staff prepared to handle such instances, before ending by saying that Karuppu now belongs to the people.Karuppu stars Trisha Krishnan as the female lead, marking her reunion with Suriya nearly two decades after their collaboration in Aaru. The ensemble cast also features Yogi Babu, Indrans, Sshivada, Swasika, Natty Subramaniam, Supreeth Reddy, and Anagha Maya Ravi, while RJ Balaji plays a pivotal role with shades of antagonism.The story follows a father-daughter duo, portrayed by Indrans and Anagha Maya Ravi, who struggle through constant delays in their legal battle, worsened by the manipulative lawyer Baby Kannan, played by RJ Balaji. Just when they begin to lose hope and surrender their fate to the divine, their case is taken up by Saravanan, portrayed by Suriya, an incarnation of Karuppusamy. Standing beside him is Preethi, played by Trisha, a lawyer with a past connection to Baby Kannan.
