In a major U-turn, after US President Donald Trump said the government would blacklist Anthropic and stop using its AI across federal agencies and the Pentagon labelled the Dario Amodei's AI startup a 'supply chain risk', a new report by Axios claims the National Security Agency (NSA) is still using Anthropic’s Claude Mythos Preview model. What is Claude Mythos?Anthropic says that Claude Mythos is its most advanced AI model so far. According to the company, the AI model can identify software vulnerabilities on its own and help prevent cyberattacks. The company had restricted this tool for general use but now it seems the US government might be using Mythos AI to strengthen its digital defences.Sources told Axios that the NSA is using Mythos,
and some parts of the department may be using it more widely. However, it is still not clear exactly how the tool is being used.As of now, there has been no official statement from Anthropic, the NSA or the US Department of Defense. This development comes shortly after discussions between Trump’s administration and Anthropic’s CEO. The talks reportedly focused on possible collaboration. It is important to note that this was the first engagement after a disagreement with the Pentagon earlier this year over how the company’s AI models should be used by the government.Bloomberg recently reported that a senior White House official has informed the US departments that a plan is being developed to bring Claude Mythos. However, it is not clear which agencies might all use it in the first phase of its rollout.According to the report, organisations with access to Mythos are using it to scan systems and detect security weaknesses before hackers can exploit them. At present, Mythos AI model is restricted by Anthropic for general use. Under the 'Glasswing Project', it has been given to companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon so far. These firms are using it to detect critical issues in their software and prevent devices from getting hacked.
