Shivan recently opened up on the surprising reason behind the title change of Love Insurance Kompany (LIK). Initially planned as LIC, short for Love Insurance Company, the film ran into legal trouble due to its similarity with Life Insurance Corporation of India. What followed was an unexpected demand that forced the makers to rethink their decision. Starring Pradeep Ranganathan, Krithi Shetty, and S J Suryah, the film eventually hit theatres with a modified title. Here’s how the issue unfolded and why the makers chose a new title.

Why Was the Original Title Of LIK Dropped?

The title immediately raised concerns due to its similarity to Life Insurance Corporation of India, one of India’s most prominent public sector organisations. Using the same acronym as a widely known firm posed legal risks. The makers soon realised that continuing with the title could lead to complications that might delay or even halt the film’s release. In a YouTube interaction with Sudhir Srinivasan, Vignesh Shivan revealed the shocking financial demand made by the insurance giant. According to him, the firm asked for Rs 112 crore if the filmmakers wished to retain the LIC title. “I don’t have Rs 112 crore,” the director said with a smile. Options like LIP, LIT, LIK, and LIF were already under consideration.

After discussions, the team zeroed in on LIK while retaining the expanded form Love Insurance Kompany. The unique spelling of Kompany added a quirky and distinctive touch, helping the film stand out. The director also mentioned that the usage of the word worked well with audiences after release, proving that the last-minute change worked in the film’s favour.

Love Insurance Kompany (LIK) finally released on April 10 after facing multiple delays. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film has managed to generate decent box office traction. Within its first four days, the film collected around Rs 39 crore worldwide. Set in the year 2040, Love Insurance Kompany explores a futuristic world where even love can be insured.

The story follows a man who relies on an app that predicts and controls relationship outcomes. However, when he falls in love, the system begins to interfere with his personal life, ultimately labeling his relationship as a failure. As the technology starts manipulating emotions rather than predicting them, he is forced to choose between logic and genuine human connection. Music composer Anirudh Ravichander once again reunites with director Vignesh for LIK. The crew of the film also includes Ravi Varman as the director of photography and Pradeep E Ragav as the editor.
