He expressed regret over the strained bond, calling Dhanush 'like a father' and saying that their relationship can be worked. The conflict began when Dhanush refused to provide a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for songs from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which Shivan directed and Dhanush produced, to be used in the documentary. The disagreement escalated over legal notices and financial demands, leaving fans and the Kollywood industry discussing the rift for over a year.

The tension took a personal turn, as Vignesh considers Dhanush more than just a producer or colleague. He spoke about how Dhanush’s birthday coincides with his late father’s death anniversary, which made the emotional bond between them stronger. Despite the legal and public dispute, She said there was no personal issue with Dhanush and expressed hope that their relationship could be mended.
In 2024, the dispute surfaced when Nayanthara’s documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairytale explored her love story with Vignesh Shivan. The couple had wanted to include songs from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, the film they first collaborated on, produced under Dhanush’s banner Wunderbar. However, Dhanush refused to grant a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the clip and song. The couple reportedly requested permission for two years but did not receive a positive response. When a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes video was included in the documentary trailer, Dhanush allegedly issued a legal notice, demanding Rs 10 crore for its usage. In response, Vignesh shared the clip on Instagram, taking the legal dispute in a public statement.

Nayanthara also spoke out about the controversy, accusing Dhanush of holding a personal grudge against the couple. In her statement, she referenced past criticisms of Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, which had been one of Dhanush’s major production successes. She revealed that comments he made pre-release had left lasting scars, and that his displeasure over the film’s success was evident even during award functions like Filmfare 2016.Vignesh Shivan is currently awaiting the release of Love Insurance Kompany (LIK) starring Pradeep Ranganathan, Krithi Shetty, SJ Suryah in the lead. The film will release on April 10.
