According to a new report shared by Sam Altman's OpenAI, Delhi-NCR has the highest number of people using ChatGPT in India. Along with Delhi-NCR, cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Chennai are leading the AI race. These cities have more people using AI for work, coding, studies and daily tasks."The top 10 cities in India account for 50 per cent of all AI users, led by Delhi NCR, which has the highest population penetration of ChatGPT in the country. Together, these cities represent less than 10 per cent of the population, making AI adoption 3X more concentrated in India than in comparable countries like the US, UK, Brazil, and Germany," OpenAI said in its report. The report also revealed that India is also among the top five countries globally
where people are using AI in advanced ways. Many users are not just asking simple questions but using AI for coding, solving problems and analysing data.OpenAI Wants To Keep Users From Switching To Rivals Like Anthropic
"India ranks among the top five nations globally in thinking capability usage per person (measured via reasoning tokens used by ChatGPT Plus users). In fact, India is one of the fastest-growing AI builder ecosystems globally, with 4x growth in Codex users in just two weeks after the launch of our Codex app in Feb 2026, as well as strong rankings in both coding and data analysis usage," ChatGPT-maker mentioned in its report. The report also revealed that the top 10 cities in India make up about 50 per cent of all AI or ChatGPT users. At the same time, these cities have less than 10 per cent of the country’s population.People in big cities use AI for data analysis up to 30 times more than those in smaller towns. Coding use is also much higher in these cities. This means people outside major cities are not getting the same benefits yet, according to the findings. OpenAI says there are some positive signs too. In education and learning, some states are seeing particularly strong engagement. In Assam, around 22 per cent of all messages are related to education and learning, which is about 20 per cent higher than the national average. Similar trends are also visible in states like Odisha, Manipur, Tripura, and Chhattisgarh, the data shows.

In health and wellness, higher engagement is observed in regions such as Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Kerala. In Jammu & Kashmir specifically, nearly 1 in 10 messages are related to health, which is about 32 per cent higher than the national average.“The central question now is how quickly the benefits of AI can extend beyond early adopters and leading cities to the wider population. Closing this gap will require expanding access, building skills, and enabling more meaningful use across the country, an effort shaped in large part by India’s young, fast-adopting population”, said Oliver Jay, Managing Director - International, OpenAI.To support broader and more inclusive AI adoption, OpenAI has been expanding its presence and partnerships across India. It is working with companies like TCS to scale AI-native software development and partnerships with fintech platforms such as Razorpay.OpenAI is also is rolling out ChatGPT Edu deals with Indian universities to boost early AI skill development among students. The ChatGPt-mamker is also focusing on localised use cases across sectors such as education, healthcare, farming, and more to ensure wider and more practical adoption of AI across the country.
