It’s
a good thing that fans already know that The Night Manager is returning for a third season, because if they had to wait not knowing what happens next, some of them would quite literally lose it. Starring Tom Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, The Night Manager Season 2 moves the story to Colombia and focuses on a new threat to the world. The series also brought back arms dealer Richard Roper in a dramatic twist. So how did the face-off between the two finally end? Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead!
Does Teddy help Pine or Richard Roper?
This season, written by creator David Farr and based on John le Carré‘s novel, viewers have learned that not only is Hugh Laurie’s Richard Roper back, he’s also been backing a new coup in Colombia with the help of his illegitimate son Teddy dos Santos (Diego Calva). Posing as British financier Matthew Ellis, Pine (Hiddleston) manages to gain Teddy’s trust by blackmailing Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone) and offers him $20 million to invest in his latest scheme.
But the wily Richard finds out Pine has infiltrated his latest mission and doesn’t want to be on the back foot. Instead, he manages to cut off Pine’s support system and eliminates all his help, both in Colombia and the UK. After Pine convinces him that Roper is using him, Teddy is ready to betray his father and take Pine to the jungle location where the arms are going to be exchanged. But a deadly surprise is waiting for them both.
How does Richard Roper get back at Jonathan Pine?
With the help of MI6 officer Sally (Hayley Squires), Pine makes sure that the arms exchange doesn’t go off, and instead have the plane land in a different location. Teddy makes the Cabreras, who are purchasing the British weapons, believe that Roper has double-crossed them with MI5. Roper first tries to lure Pine by using Roxana as bait at a bus stop. Luckily, he sees through this ruse and manages to escape. But back in the jungle, when it’s finally Roper and Pine face-to-face, the former gets to have the last laugh. The Cabreras call out Roper for betraying them when the arms dealer drops the ultimate bombshell.
Suspecting foul play, he switched the packages on the planes. Sally receives a container filled with a single role, while the deadly weapon and the rest of the arms have been delivered as promised to the Cabreras.
The Night Manager Season 2 body count
In the fifth episode, Pine lost a key ally after the head of technical at MI6, Basil (Paul Chahidi), was eliminated by Mayra (Indira Varma), the chief of the Secret Intelligence Service. In the finale, Pine loses Teddy as Roper shows no mercy and shoots his own son in the head for betraying him. Pine, too, is about to lose his life at the hands of the Caberas when his local ally and private detective Martín Álvarez (Diego Santos) arrives to rescue him. But while Martín saves Pine, he loses his own life after dropping him off at a secure location.
Furthermore, back in England, old ally Angela Burr (Olivia Colman) is trying to build a case against Mayra and other intelligence officials who helped Roper. Faced with no concrete evidence, she has to back off. But Burr has left herself exposed, and Roper’s allies within the British government made sure she was eliminated and shot dead. That's four bodies and four allies down for Pine, while Roper escapes again.
What’s next for Season 3?
Unlike Season 1, where Burr and Pine have the upper hand, Roper now claims a victory. Leaving behind a civil war and unrest in Colombia, Roper returns to England and picks up his son Danny (Noah Jupe) from boarding school. The series leaves Pine alone and helpless, while Roper is back on top. Season 3 will likely see the duo face off one last time as Pine seeks to take him down for good. Here's hoping the next season doesn't take another 10 years to return!
