Arya Stark might just get a show of her own. The fiery character we first saw in Game of Thrones (played by Maisie Williams), has more to explore about her life. And HBO seems to be in the process of "early
development" for a spinoff on her. To say that Arya is replacing Jon Snow won't be wrong. The latest bit of news comes after the network scrapped its previous sequel idea based on Jon's story. Writer George R.R. Martin himself teased an Arya Stark spinoff without giving more details. Arya, who debuted in GoT as a little girl, went on to grow into a tomboyish, headstrong, feisty assassin out to avenge the wrong done to her Stark lineage when her family gets entangled in the events of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novel.
George R.R. Martin hints at Arya Stark spinoff
According to The Hollywood Reporter, George R.R. Martin hinted at a project based around Arya Stark. He teased that the idea is being developed by HBO with writer Quoc Dang Tran already on board. Quoc is known for the Apple TV series
Drops of God. Though no casting has been done so far, fans now await to know whether Maisie Williams will return to reprise her role from
GoT.
About shelved Jon Snow series
As per the report, the project will replace the Jon Snow sequel that was supposed to bring back Kit Harington in the fan-favourite part. The development of this one took a long time, as it was intended to portray a darker, sadder, and self-destructive Jon Snow. Harington was working with screenwriters to subvert any hope of redemption for the character, and explore his self-imposed exile in the North, post the events of
Game of Thrones, where he was forced to murder Daenerys Targaryen.
Arya Stark sequel rising from Jon Snow getting scrapped
The publication stated that Jon would have been reintroduced as "a broken man with PTSD." Harington didn't want to play a hero and wanted Jon Snow to ultimately die. But the premise went into limbo at HBO, leading to the show ultimately
getting shelved in 2023. The story now seems to be getting reworked, making way for a new concept, bringing the focus of Jon's younger sister, Arya Stark.
Arya Stark in GoT ending
At the end of
Game of Thrones, Arya is seen setting sail for adventure, leaving behind the politics of the Seven Kingdoms and the continent of Essos. Her choice of moving "West of Westeros" opened up a possibility of telling her side of a new story with a time jump. Notably, it would make sense as Maisie Williams, who was 21 in the GoT finale, is now 28.
