The
Emmy-nominated Shrinking is about to conclude its third season on April 8, 2026, on Apple TV. Ahead of the finale, co-creator Bill Lawrence, who has also made classics like Scrubs and Ted Lasso, posted that the fourth season has a new story with the same cast. The critically acclaimed series has an ensemble cast that includes co-creator Jason Segel and veteran actor Harrison Ford, as well as actors Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell, Christa Miller, and Ted McGinley. Here's what Lawrence told fans on social media about his plans for the next season.
Why will Shrinking Season 4 have a new story?
Sharing a teaser for the finale of
Shrinking Season 3, Lawrence shared that he was excited to start a completely new story next year. He said it was scary, risky, and fun. That set fans off who kept asking the writer-producer what he meant. For the last three seasons, Shrinking has followed the therapists at the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Center led by Jimmy Laird (Segel), who still hasn't come to terms with the death of his wife, Tia, at the hands of a drunk driver in a car accident.
His co-workers include Ford and Williams. Maxwell plays his teenage daughter Alice, who is about to go away to college. Miller and McGinley are his next-door neighbours and friends, while Urie plays his best friend. Tennie is a former patient who becomes his tenant.
Lawrence, who co-created the show with Segel and Ted Lasso's Brett Goldstein, further clarified that Shrinking had always been pitched as a three-season story about grief, forgiveness and moving forward. Goldstein plays Louis the drunk driver responsible for Tia's death, who later grows close with Jimmy and Alice. Lawrence stated on X that they wanted to stay true to the original story and end the way we had planned.
However, it was his comment of a "new story with same cast" that got viewers confused. He also added that the story will be with the "same characters," as he wanted to keep working with the incredible cast. "We love each other," Lawrence pointed out.
