In
a world that is witnessing the rapid growth of artificial intelligence, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has warned that current AI agents are too complex. During the Meta’s Q1 2026 earnings call, he revealed in a discussion that he has a new test to check how current AI agents fit for everyday users. He introduced his ‘Mother Test’, a benchmark to simply note that AI tools must become more user-friendly before reaching the masses.
How AI Agents Can Pass Mother Test
Zuckerberg revealed that many AI agents in the industry are powerful but they fail when it comes to their usage. He noted that a truly successful product is created when it is simple enough to be used by his own mother. The
Meta CEO said, “And on the product side, we care a lot about just having something I would give to my mother. There are a lot of agents out there and there are not that many that I would want to give to my mother."Zuckerberg highlighted that simplicity matters more to him than speed. He stressed that Meta is not rushing to launch such AI agents to meet deadlines, rather it is focused on improving quality. Notably, the Meta CEO believes that the primary issues with existing AI agents is their design focusing on technical users. These AI agents need complicated steps such as system configuration, installations and command-line usage tasks that most users are not well versed with.
Zuckerberg Criticises OpenClaw
As per
Zuckerberg, OpenClaw is an example of how the current AI tools can be difficult to use for everyone. He acknowledged OpenClaw's potential but described it as ‘rough’ and not ready for mainstream adoption. “To set up OpenClaw, you need to install on a computer locally and then get into a terminal and configure a bunch of things,” he stated. He also addressed the growing focus on tech giants on AI-powered coding tools. He highlighted that coding is just a part of making AI systems smarter and not the major goal for Meta. His comments showcase a divide in the AI industry, some users may need complex and powerful tools for developers. While others may need simpler products for their everyday use. His Mother Test could be an example for setting benchmark for making the AI go mainstream and accessible for anyone.
