OpenAI Wants To Keep Users From Switching To Rivals Like Anthropic

Tech giant OpenAI seems to be facing challenges in the AI industry due to the strong competition from Anthropic. In an internal memo sent to the staff, the company’s new revenue chief, Denise Dresser, stressed the need to be a multi-product brand that ensures users do not switch to rival companies. According to The Verge, the top executive also asserted that their early investor, Microsoft, had restricted the firm’s reach in the enterprise market. Dresser asserted that the company was fundamentally built on the fear around AI. She explained, “Their story is built on fear, restriction, and the idea that a small group

of elites should control AI. She implied that OpenAI’s positive message will win in the AI race. The Dario Amodei-led firm recently reported their annual run-rate (ARR) of around $30 billion, which is higher than OpenAI’s ARR of $25 billion. It is important to note that Dresser highlighted that Anthropic’s figure might not be correct and might be inflated. She suggested that the company use an accounting treatment that made their revenue more than actual, including grossing up revenue share with Google and Amazon. Reduced Reliance On MicrosoftAccording to Dresser, Microsoft has restricted OpenAI’s growth by limiting its ability to reach clients on other platforms, including Amazon’s Bedrock. Microsoft is the major cloud provider for OpenAI. However, the Sam Altman-led company is dversifying their cloud providers, including Oracle, Google, and CoreWave. Dresser said, “Microsoft has limited our ability to meet enterprises where they are - for may that’s Bedrock.”

Moreover, OpenAI is trying to expand in the enterprise segment as it wants to compete with Anthropic. The firm has recently stated to its workforce that it will double down on tools like Codex, rather than entertaining sidequests.
