ChatGPT May Get Group Chats And Direct Messages To Make It More Social: All We Know So Far
Times Now
OpenAI is reportedly testing new social features for ChatGPT that could change how people use the AI chatbot. The latest update adds group chats and direct messaging (DMs), making ChatGPT more interactive
and team-friendly. The move comes after the launch of Sora 2, OpenAI’s new video generation model and an AI video app inspired by TikTok. Together, these updates show that OpenAI is working to make ChatGPT a single platform for all kinds of digital interaction.
ChatGPT Group Chats Feature Spotted
Recently, Tibor Blaho, Lead Engineer at AIPRM, shared a preview of the new group chat feature on social media platform X. The option appears as a 'Start a group chat' button on the top bar of the ChatGPT web app. Users can create a link to invite others to join and also view earlier messages in the group. This makes it easier for teams to catch up on ongoing discussions.Blaho said the new group chats will have their own custom instructions, separate from personal ChatGPT settings. This means users can collaborate safely without sharing their personal data or chat history.
"Group chats custom instructions are separate from custom instructions for your personal ChatGPT, and you can let ChatGPT respond automatically or only when mentioned by someone in the group chat, but your personal ChatGPT memory is never used in group chats," Blaho wrote on X.Other features include message reactions, replies, file uploads, image creation, web search, and even typing indicators.OpenAI is also testing a new Shared Projects mode to make teamwork easier. In this mode, ChatGPT can remember context and past discussions, which helps during long-term projects or group work. Team members can upload files or documents and ChatGPT will use that information to give more accurate answers in future chats. The company says these shared projects will be secure and suitable for sensitive work. With these new features, OpenAI wants to make ChatGPT a complete all-in-one platform, not just for chatting with AI, but also for working, sharing and collaborating with others.By combining AI tools, group chats, and document sharing, ChatGPT could soon compete with apps like Slack, Discord, and Microsoft Teams but with the power of AI built in.
What This Means
If rolled out widely, group chats and shared projects could make ChatGPT a key tool for students, professionals and creators. Users could discuss ideas, plan projects and get AI assistance -- all in one place.
