Ektaa
Kapoor is widely recognised as the "Czarina of Television" and "Queen of Indian Television." She is a renowned film and TV producer who has produced over 130 Indian soap operas and numerous films, which have significantly shaped the modern Indian entertainment industry and helped launch the careers of many actors. But for the unversed, her rise to dominance in Indian television wasn’t a product of privilege, but a masterclass in seizing overlooked opportunities. In 1997, she was handed a “dead slot” on Sun TV, a timeslot with no budget or respect. But Ektaa, with the slot, turned her show Kudumbam into a hit, proving she is here for a long run.
How Ektaa Kapoor turned a dead slot into multi-language hit?
Kingdom of The Soap Queen: The Story of Balaji Telefilms by Kovid Gupta mentioned the whole story of how
Ektaa Kapoor built her first megahit from a dead slot. In 1997, Ektaa, daughter of Shobha Kapoor and Jeetendra was given a “dead slot” on Sun TV, with limited budget and no prime-time prestige. She did not see it as a setback, instead, Ektaa took this opportunity to create something unique. She sent a small, dedicated team to Chennai, armed with only Rs 5,000, a few mattresses, and an idea to adapt Mumbai-based scripts for the Tamil-speaking audience.
Her simple yet brilliant,
Kudumbam, a Tamil serial, was launched in a slot where others had failed. The show didn’t just find an audience; it skyrocketed to the top and in no time, the show became the number one hit. Realizing the potential to reach a wider audience, she dubbed the show into other regional languages, including Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. Through this, she was able to enter not only the Tamil market but also eight southern states while keeping production costs low. Then came Sony, who asked Ekta, “Can you do this in Hindi?” Without hesitation, Ekta said yes, and the rest is history. This marked the beginning of his legendary journey on Indian television.
