Max has officially renewed The Pitt for a third season - a move that reflects the medical drama’s status as one of the platform’s strongest original series. The announcement was made by HBO CEO Casey Bloys on Wednesday, January 7, 2026 during the Season 2 premiere event held at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles. The timing of the news added to the excitement, arriving just one day before the Emmy-winning second season was set to premiere.

In an interaction with Variety, Casey Bloys shared after Emmys win, “It’s hard to make any good show, regardless of whether it’s comedy, drama or documentary. But what John and Noah and Scott wanted to do going in was to do a high-quality show, but also one that was set up in a way that you could do 15 episodes. So, the concept of the show being on essentially one set made the budget manageable."“And you have a group of people who understand how to make 15 episodes, but also how to bring it back on an annual basis. That is the one thing I think that we’ve gotten away from in television, that ability to bring shows back on an annual basis.”

The Pitt, created by R. Scott Gemmill and produced by industry veteran John Wells, first premiered in 2025. The series stars Noah Wyle in the lead role and follows a group of healthcare workers navigating the intense realities of an emergency room in Pittsburgh. One of the show’s most distinctive features is its real-time format. Each season takes place over the course of a single work shift, with 15 episodes representing 15 consecutive hours.
