Thalapathy Vijay’s 2016 blockbuster Theri was scheduled to return to theatres on January 15. However, producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu has announced that the film’s re-release has been postponed. The decision
to bring back Theri came after the postponement of Jana Nayagan. Vijay’s latest film faced a setback due to a Madras High Court stay on a single judge’s order. The court had previously directed KVN Productions to hold off on obtaining certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), causing the delay in the film’s release.
Why Theri’s Re-Release Was Postponed
It has been revealed that producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu decided to postpone the re-release to accommodate new films targeting the same festive window at the box office. The producers of these films requested the change to avoid clashes. Among the new releases during the Pongal festival are
Draupathi 2Draupathi 2, Thambi Thalaimaiyil, and Vaa Vathiyaar. Additionally, Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi hit theatres on January 10.
Vijay’s Jana Nayagan was initially scheduled for release on January 9 but faced CBFC hurdles. Producer Venkat K. Narayana has approached the Supreme Court to challenge the interim order passed by the Madras High Court on January 9, which stayed the single judge’s ruling by Justice P.T. Asha granting a U/A 16+ certificate for Vijay’s upcoming action film.
About Theri
In Theri, Vijay played dual roles as DCP Vijaya Kumar and Joseph Kuruvilla. Meena’s daughter Nainika portrayed his on-screen daughter, while Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Amy Jackson played key roles. The film follows a former cop who hides his identity to protect his daughter from his enemies.
Despite the delay, excitement around the re-release remains high, with fans continuing to celebrate Theri as one of Vijay’s best films. When it returns to theatres, the film is expected to reaffirm Vijay’s star power.
