a 42 year old Bengaluru resident has lost more than Rs 1.29 crore in an online investment scam that sprouted from a dating platform. As for the details, the scammers connected with the victim on a dating app and then trapped him with emotional manipulation before stealing the money.As per the police complaint lodged by victim Jagadish C on November 7, 2025, with the North CEN (Cybercrime, Economic Offences, Narcotics) Police, the scammers first contacted him on the app. The woman, identifying herself as Meghana Reddy, played a major role in gaining the confidence of the victim. She told him that she wants to undertake a philanthropic gesture in honour of his family. NDTV reported that she claimed to build an old-age-home in her father's name. This pitch worked well with Jagadish, and he agreed to invest in the same. After persuading Jagadish, the scammers asked him to visit a website claiming to offer investment opportunities in international stock markets. The platform looked pretty genuine, and the scammers also shared fake profit screenshots with Jagadish. With all the belief, the victim invested the amount in the charitable cause. He made multiple RTGS and NEFT transactions on November 5 and November 6 totaling Rs 1,29,33,253. And once the transaction was done, the communication between Jagadish and Meghana stopped abruptly. At this time, Jagadish realised that he had been scammed and he went on to file a police complaint. Dating App Scams And How To Stay SafeAs of now, there are multiple types of dating app scams running in India. Most of the time, men are subjected to money extortion or theft. The best way to stay safe is by being cautious and not trusting every Tom, Dick, and Harry you meet on dating apps. And of course, avoid sharing your financial credentials with anyone even if you trust them.
