Cha
Eun-Woo has finally gotten some relief in his never ending legal battles. The singer will continue serving in his current military band position after South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense rejected a public petition seeking a reassignment review. The decision comes months after the ASTRO member became involved in controversy over allegations of massive tax evasion. While the issue triggered formal complaints through the country’s civil petition system, authorities have now confirmed that the singer-actor’s military status will not change.
Public petition against Cha Eun-Woo dismissed
The issue resurfaced after an online community post shared details of a petition submitted through South Korea’s e-People civil complaint portal. The petitioner had requested a review of whether
Cha Eun-Woo’s assignment to the military band was appropriate post reports of unpaid taxes amounting to more than 20 billion Korean won.
The Ministry of National Defense officially responded to the petition on May 6, stating that the case did not satisfy the reassignment criteria outlined under Article 14 of the Ministry’s Personnel Management Regulations for Soldiers. As a result, Cha’s current position in the military band will be maintained. The ministry also went ahead and clarified that personal explanations and details related to the singer’s circumstances could not be publicly disclosed due to privacy concerns. Under the military regulation cited, reassignment is generally reserved for situations involving illness, disciplinary action, unit restructuring, assault-related incidents or difficulties adapting to military service.
All about Cha Eun-Woo's tax evasion scandal
Cha Eun-Woo first faced tax evasion allegations in January after reports claimed that South Korea’s National Tax Service had imposed a massive back-tax demand on him. At the time, the actor-singer responded cautiously, stating that he would cooperate fully with the ongoing procedures.
Months later, on April 8, Cha released a detailed public statement confirming that he had paid all related taxes in accordance with the National Tax Service’s findings. He also issued a direct apology to fans and the public.“I will not evade responsibility by claiming I did not know or that it was someone else’s decision,” Cha stated, adding that he was deeply sorry for causing disappointment. The actor also addressed why he had established the corporation at the center of the controversy. According to Cha, the company was created during a period of uncertainty in his entertainment career as an attempt to stabilize his professional activities. However, he admitted that he failed to fully understand the broader implications of the decision at the time. “In retrospect, I was not thinking it through during the process, and I bear sole responsibility,” he said, firmly distancing both his family and company staff from blame. In a message directed at his fanbase AROHA, Cha promised to exercise stricter oversight over his future activities and decisions. “I will strive to be someone who takes full responsibility for my choices and actions,” he said. So, despite all the controversies, Cha Eun-Woo will continue his military duties.
