The
tragic death of Bengali actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee has shaken the Bengali entertainment industry and artists are demanding accountability from producers. Now, as per new updates, Odisha Police have officially registered an FIR following a complaint by his wife Priyanka Sarkar. The 43-year-old actor drowned during a shoot at Talsari beach in Odisha on March 29. He was there with the team of TV show Bhole Baba Paar Karega. What initially appeared to be an accidental incident has now prompted demands for a deeper investigation, with family members and industry colleagues calling for transparency and accountability in the case.
Rahul Arunoday Banerjee's wife files FIR
According to the police, Rahul Arunoday Banerjee was shooting for a television serial at Talsari beach in the Balasore district when the incident occurred. Reports suggest that he accidentally slipped into the sea and drowned. He was rushed to a hospital in Digha by his associates but was declared dead upon arrival, raising concerns about the availability of immediate medical assistance on set.
Following a complaint filed by Priyanka Sarkar, an FIR was registered at the Talasari Marine police station. As per a report in PTI, authorities have stated that the investigation will cover all possible angles, including the possibility of negligence or even a criminal conspiracy. Officials have assured that evidence will be carefully examined before arriving at any conclusions.
Bengali actors organise protest march
The case has also sparked widespread outrage within the Bengali film and television fraternity. A week after Rahul’s death, members of the West Bengal Motion Pictures Artists' Forum organised a protest march in Kolkata, demanding justice for the late actor. Priyanka Sarkar joined the march. The protest saw participation from several prominent figures in the industry, including Aparna Sen, Anjan Dutt, Srijit Mukherjee, Kaushik Ganguly, Parambrata Chatterjee, and Riddhi Sen, among others. Carrying placards that read “Justice for Rahul,” the demonstrators marched from Technicians’ Studio to Radha Studio, amplifying calls for accountability.
In addition to the FIR filed in Odisha, another complaint has reportedly been lodged against the production house Magic Moments. The forum alleged that the producers failed to provide satisfactory answers regarding the circumstances of the incident. According to reports, the forum had reached out to the production team earlier but did not receive a convincing response, further intensifying suspicions. A press briefing outside the Regent Park police station in Kolkata was attended by industry veterans like Prosenjit Chatterjee, Rituparna Sengupta, and Santilal Mukherjee, who reiterated the demand for uncovering the truth behind Rahul’s death.Rahul Arunoday Banerjee rose to fame with the 2008 hit Chirodini Tumi Je Amar, directed by Raj Chakraborty, where he starred opposite Priyanka Sarkar. The couple have a son together named Shohoj.
