We have seen a lot of streaming and social media platforms biting the bullet in terms of getting sued for multiple reasons. Now, on Monday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has sued Netflix and accused the firm of spying on children and other consumers by collecting their data without consent and designing their platform in such a way that the users get addicted to it. Texas said that Netflix has falsely represented to consumers that it did not collect or share user data for years. But in reality, the platform has been actively tracking user preferences and selling viewers' habits and preferences to commercial data brokers and advertising technology companies, and even made billions of dollars a year from the data. However, Netflix is not silent
on the matter, and a spokesperson has already made a statement in the Texas court. He said, 'Respectfully to the great state of Texas and Attorney General Paxton, this lawsuit lacks merit and is based on inaccurate and distorted information. Netflix takes our members’ privacy seriously and complies with privacy and data protection laws everywhere we operate.'Google Says It Stopped A Massive AI Powered Zero Day Attack By Criminal HackersTexas' complaint highlighted Netflix co-founder and chairman Reed Hastings' statement in 2020, We don't collect anything.' Texas' complaint filed in a state court in Collin County mentioned, 'Netflix’s endgame is simple and lucrative: get children and families glued to the screen, harvest their data while they are stuck there, and then monetise the data for a handsome profit.' The complaint also added a very hard hitting line, 'When you watch Netflix, Netflix watches you.'The main focus of this lawsuit is to make Netflix purge the data it collected illegally and not use the data for targeted ads without the consent of the users, and even pay civil fines of up to $10,000 per violation.
