Vignesh Shivan Disappointed With LIK’s Poor Box Office Performance After Positive Response To Film On OTT

Shivan is known for his honest opinions on everything that happens in showbiz. The filmmaker recently penned a long note about his recent film, Love Insurance Kompany (LIK)’s poor performance at the box office. In a note, Vignesh claimed that many people saw the film on OTT, and after that they confessed that they missed watching it in theatres after reading negative reviews about it online. According to the filmmaker, negative criticism could discourage the audiences from giving the film a fair chance to perform at the box office.

Vignesh Shivan On LIK’s Underperformance

The Vignesh Shivan-directed film didn’t perform well at the box office. It was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 190 crore but could collect only Rs 66 crore. Starring Pradeep Ranganathan, SJ Suryah and Krithi Shetty in the lead roles, the Love Insurance Kompany was released on Amazon Prime Video earlier this month and, surprisingly, it received a positive response from the masses. Vignesh Shivan shared a long note on his Instagram story, in which he mentioned that he has received a lot of messages from many people saying that they missed watching the film in theatres because of the overwhelming negativity about the film online.

According to Nayanthara’s husband, some films survive negative reviews, but others don’t. Due to lack of support from their ecosystem, industry peers and influential voices, the perception of the public can change their fate. In a note, the director mentioned, “Reviews written to showcase intelligence or superiority often do more than critique a film – they can discourage audiences from giving it a chance and crush the dreams of ambitious filmmakers.” Moreover, Vignesh Shivan also said that he hasn’t fully come to terms with LIK’s box office result. He is hurt by the fact that the narrative shifted quickly after a promising opening weekend. He feels that earnest Tamil films deserve a little more generosity from their audience. Shivan feels that people don’t see the struggle behind bringing a film like this to life. The end result is indeed painful for him after facing difficulties and challenges while making and releasing the film. He also shared a line told to him by a celebrated director. According to the line, “The success of a film is often determined more by what surrounds it than by what exists within it.”
