Karthi’s
latest action-comedy, Vaa Vaathiyaar, which finally reached theatres during the Pongal season after multiple delays and financial challenges, is now streaming on OTT. Originally slated for a December release, the film was postponed due to scheduling conflicts with other films, including Vijay's Jana Nayagan. Breaking the typical four-week theatrical window in Tamil cinema, Vaa Vaathiyaar is now available on Prime Video from January 28. Featuring Krithi Shetty in her Tamil debut alongside a star-studded ensemble cast, the film opened to mixed reviews at the box office.
Vaa Vaathiyaar OTT Release: Early Digital Premiere for Karthi’s Film
Directed by Nalan Kumarasamy, the action-comedy is now streaming on Prime Video, allowing viewers to watch it in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi. Prime Video secured the OTT rights for all languages, and the film’s streaming availability commenced on January 28, providing audiences a chance to watch the film shortly after its limited theatrical run. According to Sacnilk, Vaa Vaathiyaar is closing its worldwide box office collection at around
Rs 11 crore, making it one of the lowest-grossing films in Karthi’s career.
Despite an engaging premise, the film received largely negative reviews from critics. Adding to the success of Jiiva’s Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimaiyil, Vaa Vaathiyaar struggled to make a significant impact during its brief two-week theatrical run.
Karthi’s film also faced major legal hurdles in 2025 due to outstanding debts linked to producer
Gnanavel Raja. The Madras High Court repeatedly blocked the release until over Rs 21 crore, including interest, was paid to the estate of the late Arjunlal Sunderdas. Despite partial payments and appeals from the production team, the court maintained the stay, citing repeated delays and the absence of a full settlement. These issues prevented the film from releasing during December 2025.
