Prashant Tamang, who won Indian Idol 3, passed away today (January 11), reportedly due to a heart attack. He was 43. The singer-actor was taken to a hospital in Dwarka, New Delhi, where he was declared
dead. Prashant’s demise has left everyone in shock. He was a singer who shot to fame after winning Indian Idol season 3. He had also acted in Paatal Lok season 2. Prashant Tamang was born in Darjeeling, West Bengal. After his father died in an accident, Tamang left school and joined the Kolkata Police as a constable in his father’s place. During his service, he sang for the police orchestra. Due to his passion for singing and encouraged by his seniors, Prashant auditioned for
Indian Idol season 3 in Kolkata. He received mixed comments from judges but managed to get selected for the next rounds. Eventually, Prashant impressed all the judges with his improvement. Prashant got solid support from the northeast, Nepal and West Bengal, because of which he won Indian Idol season 3. He represented the Gorkha community on the show and made them proud with his victory.
RJ Jonathan Brady, aka Nitin of Red FM in Delhi, took a dig at Prashant by stating, “Shopkeepers will now have to make their own security arrangements as Gorkhas have taken to singing.” A major protest had erupted in the Darjeeling district between Tamang supporters and local residents of Siliguri. Due to the protest, the government issued a show-cause notice to the channel for the racial slur. After his Indian Idol victory, Prashant launched his first album,
Dhanyavad, which included Nepali and Hindi songs. He also sang for a few Nepali films. Apart from singing, Tamang acted in a few Nepali films. In 2010, Prashant had made his acting debut with the Nepali film,
Gorkha Paltan. The film turned out to be a hit at the box office. Later, he acted in several Nepali films. Many people don’t know that Prashant did a guest appearance as a celebrity himself in a TV show,
Amber Dhara. His last screen appearance was in
Paatal Lok season 2, in which he played the role of Daniel Acho. Prashant’s demise has indeed left everyone in deep sorrow.
