Official! Rajinikanth's Thalaivar 1773, backed by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International have roped in director Cibi Chakaravarthi to helm the film. The makers took to social media to share the much-awaited news. After various delays, the mega-collaboration between Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan is back on track, with Chakaravarthi officially on board to lead the film. Their announcement comes weeks after the exit of director Sundar C, who was first confirmed to direct the project. As per reports, creative disagreements led the Aranmanai filmmaker to part ways with the team. His sudden exit served as a big blow to Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, stalling the film's progress.

Now that Chakaravarthi is on board, Thalaivar 173 is set to commence in the coming weeks. The makers are aiming for a Pongal 2027 release for this light-hearted family drama, and the pre-production is currently progressing at full swing to stay on schedule.Its title poster was unvieled by the makers on Saturday. The much-anticipated movie has been creating buzz ever since Rajinikanth and Haasan confirmed their reunion at an event last year. But the project landed in a controversy after Sundar C left the project, citing "unforeseen and unavoidable circumstances." Since then, speculations have been rife about several directors narrating their stories to the star, with most reports hinting that Parking filmmaker Ramkumar Balakrishnan and Dragon director Ashwath Marimuthu had met Thalaivar. There were also rumours about RKFI dropping out of the project. However, the makers have shut down all unverified claims regarding the film with the new announcement.

While it is uncertain if Kamal and Rajinikanth will share screen space in the upcoming film, they last appeared together in Thillu Mullu (1981) in Tamil and Geraftaar (1985) in Hindi.

While cast and plot details are yet to be revealed, rumour mills suggest that Sai Pallavi and Kathir are in early talks to join the team. However, an official update is awaited.
