CEO Sam Altman, in a post on social media platform X, said that in a post-AGI world, people may work in the way they do today and the economy could collapse. Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is and advanced form of AI that can do most tasks that humans can do."Post-AGI, no one is going to work and the economy is going to collapse," Altman wrote on Elon Musk-owned social media platform. If that happens, many companies might start depending more on AI systems instead of people for things like coding, writing, research and even decision-making.
"I am switching to polyphasic sleep because GPT-5.5 in codex is so good that i can't afford to be sleeping for such long stretches and miss out on working," he added. His comments come just after OpenAI rolled out its new model -- GPT-5.5. The company behind the popular AI chatbot says this is its most capable and user-friendly model yet. It is built to handle tasks like writing, coding, research and data analysis.

"GPT-5.5 is designed to understand user intent and handle more responsibility as it completes tasks on its own. Rather than asking for step-by-step instructions, the AI can now plan, use tools, and verify its work and it will continue working through unclear and complex problems," the company said. According to OpenAI’s president and co-founder Greg Brockman, the GPT-5.5 can handle complex tasks and operates efficiently at scale with low latency."GPT-5.5 is a new class of intelligence. This intelligence makes it intuitive to use; it completes challenging tasks with little micromanagement. Also very token efficient, and runs with low latency and at scale. A real step toward a new way of getting computer work done," Brockman saidAt present, GPT-5.5 is available in ChatGPT and Codex for some paid users. This includes people on Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise plans. The company also plans to release a more advanced version, GPT-5.5 Pro, for selected users soon.
AI vs JobsAccording to AI experts, the idea of a regular 9-to-5 job could slowly change and they are already seeing early signs of this shift. AI tools today can handle tasks that earlier needed full teams. Because of this, one person can now do much more work in less time.At the same time, this is also changing how people behave. Some are trying to stay online longer, work more, and keep up with AI speed. The pressure to do more in less time is clearly increasing.

If AI replaces jobs faster than new ones are created, it could create serious economic challenges. However, not everyone agrees with Altman’s take on AGI. Many experts believe that while some jobs may go away, new ones will also be created. They argue that humans will still be needed for creativity, judgment and real-world decision-making.It is important to note that AGI has not arrived yet but aggressive advancements in AI by companies like Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta, Nvidia suggest that such a future may not be very far.
