Speaking candidly during the trailer launch of Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, he David praised Varun not just for his success as an actor but for being a devoted son who stood beside him during difficult times, including hospital visits. Recalling how Varun would stay overnight with him at the hospital and constantly look after his health, David said every parent would wish for a son like him. The filmmaker also mentioned his elder son Rohit Dhawan and said that both his sons have always supported and cared for him at every stage of his life.

David Dhawan said Varun has always stood by him through every phase of life, especially during difficult health situations. Recalling moments from his hospital stay, the veteran director shared how his son never left his side.“He's been a great son, first I'll say. He's always looked after me, my health, anything you know. He's always there, standing by,” David said. The filmmaker then became emotional while remembering Varun’s care during his time in the hospital. “In the hospital also, he used to sleep there with me," he added.
David also said how proud he feels to see Varun grow professionally over the years. While praising his son's journey as an actor, he stressed that family values are very important to him as a father. He added, "As a father if I tell you, everybody should have a son like him." The emotional conversation did not end there. David also mentioned his elder son, filmmaker Rohit Dhawan, and praised both his children for always supporting him.
