Vijay's much-awaited final film Jana Nayagan just cannot seem to catch a break. Even before it has released in theatres, the film has been hit by one controversy after another. First came the CBFC censor delays. Then the entire film was leaked online. Now, a fresh problem has come up from an unexpected place Madurai. Villagers in the region have come out to protest against the film, waving black flags and raising their voices against what they say is a wrong and unfair portrayal of their community on screen.
Madurai Villagers Call Out Jana Nayagan Over Misrepresentation
Residents from a village near Madurai have staged a protest against Jana Nayagan. They carried black flags and demonstrated publicly against the film. Their main complaint is that scenes in the film show their village or community in a negative and inaccurate light. The protesters say that the way their area has been shown in the film does not reflect reality. They feel it damages the image and reputation of their community. This kind of misrepresentation, they argue, is deeply hurtful and must be addressed before the film releases.
Jana Nayagan has already been at the centre of a storm of controversies. The film triggered widespread backlash after social media users pointed out strong similarities to the Telugu blockbuster Bhagavanth Kesari, contradicting director H Vinoth's earlier claims of originality. The film was also caught up in the Karur tragedy, when allegations circulated on social media claiming that a gathering was linked to the filming of scenes for Jana Nayagan. Leaders of Vijay's party TVK denied these claims, calling them fabricated.
Jana Nayagan To Release On May 8?
Despite all the trouble, there is finally some good news for fans. After months of delays, reports suggest that Jana Nayagan will hit cinemas worldwide on May 8, 2026. This has brought a wave of excitement across Tamil Nadu and beyond. The film was originally scheduled to release on January 9, 2026, but was postponed because it did not receive a certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification. The makers moved to court against the board, and after a legal battle, the film was finally submitted to the revising committee. If the film releases on May 8, it will be just a few days after the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results, which are reportedly expected to be declared on May 4. Vijay is himself contesting in these elections, making the timing of the release very significant.Jana Nayagan had already received record advance bookings of over Rs 100 crore worldwide before its original January release date. Despite the film being leaked online, Vijay's massive fan following is expected to ensure strong box office collections.Jana Nayagan is directed by H Vinoth and features Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Mamitha Baiju, Bobby Deol, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani, and Narain. Music is by Anirudh Ravichander. This is widely believed to be Vijay's final film before he steps fully into politics.
