actor Indrans, who is currently receiving praise for his performance in Karuppu starring Suriya and directed by RJ Balaji, has opened up about his experiences working in Tamil cinema. While many assume this is his first major outing in Kollywood, film enthusiasts will recall that he earlier appeared in Thalapathy Vijay’s Nanban. In a recent interview, the veteran actor spoke about his time on the sets of Nanban, where he shared screen space with Vijay and worked under filmmaker Shankar.
Indrans recalls working with Vijay in Nanban
Indrans shared his experience of working alongside Vijay during the filming of Nanban. In an interview with Cineulagam, he said it was a special moment for him to be part of a project featuring such a admired actor. He recalled a particular scene where he was seated alongside Vijay and veteran actor Sathyaraj. Indrans who played Govindan in the film said that being on set with such established stars was an important experience in his career. The actor also spoke about Vijay’s popularity, saying he is loved across the country and holds a strong fan base in Kerala as well.
IApart from Vijay, Indrans also spoke about filmmaker Shankar and his admiration for the director’s work. He said he had long wished to act in one of Shankar’s films. Indrans revealed that Shankar noticed his performances during a phase when he was mainly doing comedy roles. He added that the director had watched his earlier work and appreciated his style. The actor also said that while he has performed in serious roles, his comic timing and voice often suited lighter characters, which helped him gain recognition.
About Indrans Role in Karuppu
In Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji, starring Suriya in the lead, Indrans plays Mattancherry Sukumaran, a helpless working-class father from Kerala. Sukumaran travels to Chennai with his ailing daughter Binu to seek a liver transplant. However, tragedy strikes when the jewellery he carries to fund her surgery is stolen. Instead of receiving help, he is trapped and exploited by a corrupt legal system led by a manipulative lawyer.
In the same interview, Indrans admitted that he was initially nervous about acting in another language, especially alongside Suriya. He said he usually feels apprehensive while working in non-Malayalam films, and the presence of Suriya added to his anxiety. However, he revealed that he agreed to take up the role mainly because the character was written as a Malayali, which made him more comfortable with the project.
