Who is MS Subbulakshmi?
Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi, popularly known as
MS Subbulakshmi, was raised in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Considered one of India’s greatest classical musicians and a legendary exponent of Carnatic music, she began performing at a very young age. Subbulakshmi shot to fame with the devotional depth in her voice and command over classical music. She went on to become a global ambassador of Indian culture, performing at prestigious venues including the United Nations in 1966. Known as the ‘Queen of Carnatic Music’, Subbulakshmi took devotional compositions such as the Vishnu Sahasranamam, Bhaja Govindam, and Meera bhajans to every Indian household. While her voice hypnotised listeners, she acted in a few films, mostly the Tamil and Hindi versions of Meera, which brought her nationwide fame.
Subbulakshmi was the first musician to receive India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1998. She was also the first Indian musician to receive the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the first woman to be awarded the prestigious Sangeetha Kalanidhi title by the Madras Music Academy. The veteran singer passed away on December 11, 2004, in Chennai at the age of 88.
