Train
To Busan director Yeon Sang-Ho is set to give us a new species of zombies this time, in his upcoming movie, Colony. With this, the ace filmmaker returns to the apocalypse genre taking stakes higher. The movie also stands out for its powerhouse starcast. The makers officially announced the film, along with its striking teaser trailer, and it promises to be a nerve-racking thriller. Nearly a decade after raising the bar for zombie cinema with the cult Train To Busan, starring Gong Yoo and Ma Dong-Seok, Yeon Sang-Ho is set to explore contemporary fears through an intense survival narrative. What makes Colony a must-watch? Here's everything to know about the upcoming Korean film.
What is Colony about?
As Yeon Sang-Ho explained, zombie films are in themselves a unique lens to reflect societal anxieties, and Colony is intended to capture the fears of the present time, much like Train to Busan did nearly ten years ago.
Official plot of Colony
Set within a sealed building, Colony revolves around a group of survivors trapped amid a mysterious infection. As the situation escalates, they must confront increasingly evolved infected beings while struggling to stay alive.
Starcast of Colony
Colony boasts of an impressive ensemble cast led by Jun Ji-Hyun, marking her return to the big screen after more than a decade. Her last movie was Assassination. Joining her is action-star and fan-favourite Ji Chang-Wook. The film also stars Koo Kyo-Hwan, Shin Hyun-Been, Kim Shin-Rok and Go Soo. While Koo Kyo-Hwan takes on the role of a biology professor with a unique perspective but uncertain convictions, Shin Hyun-Been plays a biotechnology expert attempting to uncover the cause of the crisis from outside the building. The narrative structure offers both an internal survival story and an external investigative angle, adding depth to the film's tension.
Colony's teaser trailer
The makers released a teaser video heightening the thrill around the movie. In 30-seconds, it manages to leave the viewers on the edge of their seats with anticipation. We are introduced to a world that has been infected by a suspected virus that's turning humans into zombies. The bigger concern here is that these creatures are evolving, and from four legs, they are standing up and walking on two, "taking humans to the next level." It is "the birth of a new species," and that's what the central characters of the film have to fight against.
Colony release date in India?
Colony is set to release in theatres on August 28, 2026. Though one can expect its release even in India, given the esteemed starcast and the director, fans await a clear and official confirmation on the same.
