Valmiki Ramayana, or in popular context, Ramayana, is an eternal tale of virtue, bravery, love, sacrifice, trust and devotion. The Sanskrit poem, comprising 24,000 verses, details the life of Lord Rama in seven ‘Kanda’ or chapters. Nitesh Tiwari retells this epic with Ramayana: Part 1 and Ramayana: Part 2. For Ranbir Kapoor to play Maryada Purshottam is more than just a physical transformation; it is emotional, sentimental and of great cultural value. Ramayana has multiple events and to dive deep into each, just one film isn’t enough. The first part of the film includes the initial years of Rama and Sita. All references are borrowed from the Valmiki Ramayana, which describes each event under different ‘Kandas’.The teaser of Ramayana premiered
on Hanuman Janmotsav. Though fans missed Sunny Deol’s Hanuman in the Rama introduction glimpse, the events shown lead to the revered meeting of Lord and his devotee. The film’s teaser highlights the chapters that occurred in Rama’s life before the final battle with Ravana, played by Yash. Derived from Valmiki Ramayana’s verses, the Rama teaser includes various ‘Kanda’. Let us understand the story of each chapter.
Bal Kanda
Bal Kanda is the first part of
Valmiki Ramayana. It explains the birth of Lord Rama along with his youth, adulthood and marriage to Sita. Born to King Dashrath and his first wife Kaushalya, Rama is the eldest of all Ayodhya princes. The natural successor to the throne, he is a master in sword fighting, and battlefield tactics. While being a great warrior, he is loved by the people of Ayodhya, who bow down to their future king with respect and love. As shown in the teaser, he passes the Shiv Dhanush test, which is a prerequisite to marry Sita, the daughter of Mithila king Janak. It is a match made in heaven.
One of the highlights of the Rama teaser is Parashuram’s challenge to Rama. In
Bal Kanda, Parashurama challenges Rama to string the Vaishnava bow. This is to make him realise that he is the superior avatar of Vishnu. This happens after Rama marries Sita and they are on their way back to Ayodhya.
Ayodhya Kanda
Rama, the most eligible king for
Ayodhya, has to leave his palace and remain in exile for 14 years. His father, King Dashrath, is bound by his third wife, Kaikeyi, asks his eldest son to renounce the kingdom and his lavish life. Sita and Lakshmana choose to leave their palace life and stay with Rama throughout his exile. After being crowned as the king, he is deprived of his kingdom. Wearing saffron-coloured simple clothes along with Rudraksh Mala, they seek Dashrath’s blessings before starting their journey into the forest. The teaser of Rama highlights the chapter in detail. In the clip that has no dialogue, Dashrath’s ‘Ram’ echo breaks the silence.
Aranya Kanda
Leaving Ayodhya behind them, Rama, Sita and Lakshmana begin their forest journey. Survival is difficult, but nothing comes between dharma. In the
Aranya Kanda, Ramayana showcases the Surpanakha chapter along with Jatayu’s sacrifice. Living in a forest, Rama adapts to a different lifestyle and is surrounded by nature. The teaser shows him chasing a golden-coloured rare deer for Sita. Jatayu, the divine vulture and an old friend of Dashrath, is a hero who sacrifices his wings and life while trying to protect Sita from Ravana’s evil intentions. Ending the visual spectacle is Yash. Though his face hasn’t been revealed yet, the Pushpak Viman is an important aspect of the chapter.
Ramayana, a
Diwali 2026 release, celebrates the centuries-old story that is deeply embedded in the Hindu culture and mythology. Sunny Deol is Hanuman, and Sai Pallavi plays Sita, whereas Ravi Dubey has been cast as Lakshmana. TV’s OG Ram, Arun Govil, plays King Dashrath. Indira Krishnan is Kaushalya. The entire Valmiki Ramayana will be told on the big screen by 2027.
