National capital Delhi is reportedly facing a public safety crisis as recent police data has revealed over 800 people vanished in the first 15 days of 2026. Among them, over 500 are women, children and young girls. Last year, 5,081 teenagers were reported missing out of which 3,970 were girls. These numbers are worrying and show why personal safety, especially while travelling has become more important than ever. While authorities are working their investigations, there are a few simple safety tools already available on smartphones that can help users stay connected and alert in case of an emergency. One of the most useful features is live location sharing. If you are travelling alone or returning home late, you can share your real-time location with
family or trusted friends. This small step can make a big difference. - On Android phones, users can open Google Maps and tap the profile icon to enable 'Location Sharing.' From there, you can select contacts and decide how long they can track your movement. - iPhone users can use the Find My app to share their location with close contacts. Meta-owned popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp also offers live location sharing inside any chat, which is quick and easy to use during travel. - Even, Instagram has also started live location sharing. If you are in doubt when travelling, you can enable location services on these social apps.
Another important step is choosing verified cab services. Apps like Uber, Rapido and Ola allow users to track rides, share trip details and even use an in-app emergency button. Before starting your ride, always verify the vehicle number and driver details given in the app. You can also share trip status with family members directly from these ride-hailing apps so someone knows where you are.India also has a dedicated emergency application called the 112 India app. This app works as a one-stop solution for emergency services including police, ambulance and women’s safety helplines. - After installing and setting it up on smartphones, users can press the SOS button to instantly alert authorities. The app can automatically send your location and basic details to emergency responders and selected contacts. It is especially useful in situations where making a call may not be possible.Nowadays, many smartphones come with built-in SOS features. On both Android smartphones and iPhones, pressing the power button multiple times can trigger an emergency alert, call local authorities and send your location to saved contacts. These features are usually disabled by default so I would suggest users to check their settings and activate them in advance. We should remember technology can act as a strong support system for personal safety. Activating these basic smartphone features takes only a few minutes but can be extremely helpful in risky situations. Make sure your family members, especially kiss, women and elderly users also know how to use these tools.
