Shubhangi
Atre gave Angoori Bhabhi, one of the popular female characters on Indian television, a distinct voice and innocence that took her closer to the audience. She played the role for the longest time in Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain. Now, when the producers are taking the show to the big screen, Atre is the obvious choice. Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain! Fun on the Ride releases in theatres on February 6. Ahead of it, Shubhangi spoke to Zoom about drawing inspiration from her mother to make Angoori relatable and real. Calling her ‘Living Angoori’, the actress took notes from her surroundings before adding her own creative inputs.
Shubhangi Atre on Angoori Bhabhi's inspiration
In an exclusive interview with Zoom, Shubhangi said every actor takes inspiration from either home, society or friends circle to slip into the skin of the character. Talking about putting her heart into Angoori, she said, “Characters are extensions of your personality. I am from Madhya Pradesh, and my mother is a homemaker. I have seen my bua, maasi, and chachi being devoted homemakers. Unki duniya unke husband ke aage peeche hi rehti thi (Their worlds would revolve around their husbands). Unke liye khana banana, vrat rakhna (It would always be cooking for them or praying for their long lives.). I call my mother living Angoori because she has this habit of singing while cooking. I have taken inspiration from my mother to play Angoori.”
Similarities with Angoori
When asked if
Shubhangi is similar to Angoori, the actress said, “Zyada different toh nahi hai. Maine thoda bohot padh likh liya, Angoori jitne dehati nahi hu. I like to cook and feed people. Mujhe mere dost aur colleagues Annapurna hi bulate hai. Set par bhi main kuch na kuch banati rehti thi. Voh meri aadat hai. Angoori bohot innocent hai. Manipulate karna nahi aata usko. Main bhi vaisi hi hu. Mere parents ne aage badhne ke liye teen cheezein sikhayi hai. Simplicity, humbleness and honesty. Aaj ke zamane mein bohot rare hai simple rehna. Manipulate hoke log apne aap ko change karte hai. Aap apne roots aur sanskriti se jude rahoge toh nobody can touch you. Main apni simplicity khona nahi chahti. Yeh cheez Angoori mein bhi hai. Humble aur honest rehna.”(Translation: There isn’t much difference between us. I am educated, but not Angoori. I like to cook and feed people. My friends and colleagues call me Annapurna. I would often cook on set. That is who I am. Angoori is very innocent, and so is Shubhangi. She can’t manipulate people. I am similar. My parents have taught me three mantras for a happy and successful life – Success, Humbleness and Honesty. It is rare to find simple people. They are manipulated easily and end up changing themselves. If your roots are deep into Indian culture, there’s nobody who can touch them. I don’t want to lose my simplicity. Angoori also feels this.)
