The production house of Vijay's final film Jana Nayagan moved the Supreme Court of India on January 12, Monday against an order of stay passed by a Division Bench of the Madras High Court over the certification
of the film. KVN Productions, the banner behind the film approached the Supreme Court against a January 9 order of a High Court Division Bench, which froze the implementation of a Single Judge Bench’s order to the issuance of the film obtaining UA certificate, which led to halting its immediate release ahead of Pongal. The production house has named the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and its Regional Officer as respondents in its petition before the Supreme Court. The producers had initially approached the High Court, stating that despite the CBFC’s examining committee giving it a U/A 16 certificate, the Board’s chairperson had referred the film to a revising committee.
Amid Censor Row Jana Nayagan Makers Moves Supreme Court
The production house told the Single Judge Bench that an investment of Rs 500 crore had been spent on the film, which was scheduled for a worldwide release on January 9, 2026. They also revealed the movie had been submitted to the CBFC for certification on December 18, 2025. The CBFC’s five-member examining committee watched the film on December 19 and recommended a U/A 16+ certificate, suggesting a few cuts. This decision was said to the makers on December 22. After making the said changes, the producers resubmitted the film on December 24. On December 29, they were told that the CBFC would grant a U/A certificate. However, on January 5, the Regional Officer mentioned the CBFC chairman had decided to send the film to a revising committee.
The CBFC explained that one examining committee member had later complained that his objections were not properly considered. The Board also said that under the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules, 2024, the chairman has the authority to send a film to a revising committee, and that courts have limited scope to review certification decisions.
