Tech
giant OpenAI has confirmed that it is launching a new artificial intelligence model focusing on cybersecurity, called ‘GPT-5.5 Cyber.' The company CEO Sam Altman took to X on Wednesday to announce the wider rollout of this model coming in the next few weeks to a limited group of cyberprofessionals. Interestingly, this move comes after Anthropic’s Mythos AI is significantly gaining popularity, which offers powerful AI capabilities to identify critical software vulnerabilities and has been restricted to a select group of users. Raising the competition in the AI market, OpenAI’s tool could emerge as a strong rival to Mythos.
What Is GPT-5.5 Cyber?
Sam Altman-led
OpenAI has described its latest AI model as a ‘frontier cybersecurity model,' built to help experts detect vulnerabilities, analyse threats, and protect critical systems. While the complete details are still under wraps, it is likely to enhance the previous models and offer more powerful tools for cybersecurity experts. The OpenAI CEO tweeted, “We're starting rollout of GPT-5.5-Cyber, a frontier cybersecurity model, to critical cyber defenders in the next few days. We will work with the entire ecosystem and the government to figure out trusted access for cyber; we want to rapidly help secure companies/infrastructure.”
Moreover, the latest GPT-5.5 Cyber follows the GPT-5.4 Cyber, which was launched a couple of weeks ago. That iteration rolled out features like binary reverse engineering, which allows cybersecurity experts to study compiled software and spot vulnerabilities without needing the original code.
Who Can Access GPT-5.5
The tech giant confirmed that it is not releasing
GPT-5.5 for public use. Instead, the company will provide its access only limited to a select group of researchers, organisations, and the cybersecurity teams. It is noteworthy that the distribution of this AI model will be managed under the company’s Trusted Access for Cyber (TAC) program, which primarily focuses on allowing powerful tools only to responsible users while maintaining safeguards.
Why Could the AI Model Raise Privacy Concerns?
While the technology is highlighted to strengthen digital defenses, it may also pose risks. Just like Anthropic’s Mythos, tools like these can detect vulnerabilities but could also be used to exploit them if they fall into the wrong hands.
