The
Russo Brothers-backed Citadel, starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden in the lead, is returning with its second season on May 6. It premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2023. Now, three years later, Mason and Nadia’s story continues. Citadel season 1 ended with a cliffhanger, and the audience sought answers to questions that remained unsolved. Joe Russo, David Weil and Greg Yaitanes served as directors of the second season. As Citadel 2 is closer to its premiere time, let’s rewind and brush up on facts and subplots that would help in understanding the twists shown in the spy thriller.
What is Citadel season 1's story?
The show follows the story of
Citadel spies Mason Kane (Richard) and Nadia Sinh (
Priyanka). They are presumed killed during a mission in Italy when they are ambushed by Manticore agents. Their memories are wiped out. Mason leads a new life as Kyle Conroy. Citadel agent Bernard Orlick gets to know that Mason is still alive and abducts him and his family. He is informed about his past, and Orlick seeks his help to retrieve the case while keeping its potentially world-altering data out of Manticore's reach. On the other hand, Nadia has also survived the Italy attack and lives as Charlotte Vernon. Kylie discovers her and helps her regain her memory with the help of a serum. While he already has a family, it is revealed that Nadia is living with their daughter, named Asha. As they deal with emotional turmoil, they have to find out the mole in the system. Mason and Nadia have to identify the Citadel agent who sold the agency to Manticore. During the show, the threat comes home when Asha is kidnapped on Dahlia’s instructions.
Who is the mole in Citadel?
In the finale, it is clear that Nadia isn’t the mole in the system. Mason's memories is regained. The audience is then introduced to young Mason, who was then called Paul. His father is dead and his mother abandons him. It is revealed that Dahlia is his mother. Influenced by the '60s thriller Seconds, Paul decides to become a spy and reinvent himself. Eventually, he falls in love with Nadia. He can’t handle her rejection when she leaves him. Mason asks Dahlia to help him locate her. She convinces him to recover the list of Citadel’s agents to seek revenge. She launches an attack, which was shown in the first episode, that almost killed Nadia and Mason. The reason behind the revenge is that her husband wasn’t killed in a terrorist explosion. Citadel was behind his death as they hit the wrong coordinates while trying to take down a terrorist cell.
