IT: Welcome to Derry creators Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti have now teased major thematic shifts for Seasons 2 and 3 of the hit HBO horror series based as a prequel to the popular Stephen King novel, revealing that the story will evolve far beyond the “weaponisation of fear” explored in Season 1.Following the strong reception to the show’s debut season - which earned high praise from both critics and audiences - the creative team confirmed that future installments will take the story into darker and more emotionally complex territory. While Season 1, set in 1962, focused heavily on fear, racism, violence, and economic decline within the town of Derry, the next chapters will centre on “the weaponisation of faith” and “the weaponisation of love.”
Speaking about the direction of the series, Andy Muschietti explained that the show is designed to reflect real-world anxieties and manipulation tactics that remain relevant today. He noted that fearmongering is often used to divide people, adding that not everything presented by those in power should automatically be trusted. These upcoming themes are expected to deepen the mythology surrounding Pennywise, allowing the cosmic entity’s influence over
Derry to expand in new psychological and emotional ways. The “weaponisation of faith” could explore how superstition, paranoia, and blind belief allow Pennywise to manipulate entire communities, while “the weaponisation of love” may shift focus toward emotional trauma, broken relationships, grief, and the powerful bonds between characters. The comments also hint at a more character-driven approach in future seasons, potentially examining how love, trust, and loyalty can become vulnerabilities exploited by evil. This could further connect to iconic relationships tied to It, including themes associated with the Losers Club and family dynamics within Derry.
Barbara Muschietti stated that Stephen King has remained closely involved with the series, reading material before production and supporting the creative team’s expansion of the original story. His involvement has allowed the HBO adaptation to introduce new ideas while remaining faithful to the spirit of the novel.Andy also suggested that the show’s themes may become even more politically charged moving forward, referencing the importance of younger generations creating stories that push back against authoritarianism and fascism.Although HBO has not officially announced a release date for Season 2, speculation currently points toward a premiere in late 2027 or early 2028. In India, It Welcome To Derry can be watched on Jio Hotstar.
