In a candid moment during promotions, David Dhawan hinted that
Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai this project could be his last. He admitted that health concerns and a desire to slow down have made him reconsider continuing behind the camera. “I don’t think I should do more. This might be my last film… after this, I’ll just be Varun’s father,” he said.
The film, which stars Varun alongside Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur, marks yet another collaboration between father and son. However, David made it clear that their bond doesn’t affect their work on set. For him, the priority has always been the performance. He shared that when he’s directing, he doesn’t see Varun as his son but purely as an actor who needs to deliver.He also talked about how Varun has grown over the years, saying that after making more than a dozen movies, the actor is now more mature and has a better understanding of his craft.

Reflecting on his filmmaking style, David addressed Varun’s playful remarks about the absence of a bound script. He explained that in his time, many actors worked based on trust and scene-by-scene narration rather than detailed scripts, recalling how stars like Salman Khan, Govinda, and Sanjay Dutt were comfortable with that approach.
The thought of retirement comes after a difficult phase during the shoot of the film. David revealed he wasn’t keeping well at the time and credited Varun for being a strong support system. He described his son as someone deeply involved with the family, who stayed in touch with doctors and ensured everything was taken care of during his recovery.
