HBO
is sticking with its popular Game of Thrones franchise for the foreseeable future. On November 20, the network announced that the prequel series House of the Dragon would be back for a fourth season, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was renewed for a second season even before its first season premiere. Here's all you need to know about the Game of Thrones spinoffs, adapted from George RR Martin's books.
House of the Dragon renewed for Season 4, see new pics
The official account of
House of the Dragon unveiled two new pics of Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D'Arcy) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) gearing up for war in Season 3. The first photo shows D'Arcy's Rhaenyra holding a crown, as the caption states, "For the crown at any cost. #HOTD returns Summer 2026. Stream Seasons 1 & 2 on @hbomax."
Meanwhile, the second photo is a bit more gory, as it shows Daemon in the middle of a battle. A bloodied Smith is holding a sword, and he waits for an unknown enemy. The caption reads, "War is here. #HOTD returns Summer 2026."
At an HBO presentation in New York City, Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max, revealed that
House of the Dragon would be back for a fourth season. The new season is set to arrive on TV screens by 2028. There is one significant change in the announcement, as the network has not announced Season 4 as the last season. According to
Deadline, showrunner Ryan Condal is writing the fourth season, and the plans for the show could change.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms renewed for Season 2
Additionally,
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is set to premiere on January 18, 2026, has also been renewed. The second season of the
Game of Thrones prequel will premiere in 2027. This means that the
Game of Thrones spinoff series will be airing every year from 2026 to 2028. The adaptation of Martin’s
Dunk and Egg novellas was originally slated to premiere in late 2025.
