Elon Musk Plans To Rebrand Grokipedia As Encyclopedia Galactica, Here Is Why
Times Now
Tesla and xAI chief Elon Musk has announced that Grokipedia, his AI-based alternative to Wikipedia, will be rebranded as Encyclopedia Galactica after it achieves stronger quality standards. He shared the
update on X, describing it as a long-term goal inspired by his love for science fiction."When Grokipedia is good enough (long way to go), we will change the name to Encyclopedia Galactica. It will be an open source distillation of all knowledge, including audio, images and video. Join @xAI to help build the sci-fi version of the Library of Alexandria," he posted on the social media platform.
The rebranding hints at a broader mission -- turn Grokipedia into a massive, multimedia-rich knowledge hub that goes beyond text. Musk wants it to serve as a universal source of information with open-source foundations.
How Grokipedia Works Right Now
Grokipedia was launched by xAI as an AI-generated, centralised encyclopaedia. Unlike Wikipedia, which depends on volunteer editors, Grokipedia uses Grok, xAI’s large language model, to write and fact-check entries. This also means users cannot edit pages manually since all content flows through Grok’s AI-driven system.
Early Issues
Despite the bold vision, some users have pointed out reliability problems. Muliple reports lately mentioned that it is struggling with factual mistakes and ideological bias. Grok itself faced controversy this year after generating anti semitic content which xAI later blamed on a faulty code update. The company issued an apology.
The Road Ahead
Musk is positioning the future Encyclopedia Galactica as a stronger, more trustworthy alternative to Wikipedia. The platform will support multiple formats text, audio, video and more, to give users a richer experience. For now, Grokipedia hasa long way to go, as Musk admits. Its success will depend on whether xAI can fix accuracy issues, reduce bias, and build user trust while scaling such an ambitious knowledge project.
