film producer and former CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification) chairperson Pahlaj Nihalani passed away on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the age of 76, at Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. Born on January 10, 1950, Nihalani spent over four decades of his life shaping Hindi Cinema. He started as a commercially driven producer who used to launch Bollywood’s newer names on the list. Later, as a censor board chief, whose tenure became one of the most debated chapters in the Indian Film Industry. The producer who gave Bollywood new stars

Pahlaj Nihalani entered the film industry in 1982 with his production debut, Haathkandi, starring Shatrughan Sinha, Reena Roy and Sanjeev Kumar. In 1986, he introduced Govinda in the Hindi Cinema with his film Ilzaam, while Aag Hi Aag was released a year later, marking the debut of now famous Chunky Panday.

Over the decades, he produced films like Shola Aur Shabnam, Aankhen, Dil Tera Diwana, Talaash, Julie 2 and Rangeela Raja, a decade-long filmography built around the era’s biggest names, such as Shatrughan Sinha, Dharmendra and Divya Bharti. Nihalani also served as president of the Association of Motion Pictures, and he was also a TV program producer for several years before his career shift to the censor board.

The censor chief who sparked a national debate

In early January 2015, Nihalani was appointed as the new chairperson of CBFC. He held the post as the chairperson till August 2017, when Prasoon Joshi replaced him. His tenure remained controversial due to delays in certification, suggested cuts and public controversies over films like Udta Punjab, Lipstick Under My Burkha, and Indu Sarkar.

However, among these films, Udta Punjab’s controversy remained most significant, with Nihalani-led CBFC suggesting 89 cuts in the film. But a court ruling allowed the release of the film with just one cut, making it a landmark decision for freedom of expression in Indian Cinema. Meanwhile, Nihalani consistently defended his maiden decisions on the film while citing certification rules and cultural concerns, leading to filmmakers accusing the board of crossing from certification to censorship. Pahlaj Nihalani leaves behind a legacy that refuses to be contained neatly in just one box. He was the producer who gambled on new names in the industry and made them a household name.
