playback singer Suman Kalyanpur is no more. The 89-year-old breathed her last on May 31 at her Mumbai residence. Author and close associate Mangala Khadilkar told PTI that the veteran Indian singer passed away peacefully around 8 pm at her residence. She further revealed that Suman Kalyanpur listened to her own songs during the final days of her life. A popular singer in the 1960s and 1970s, Suman Kalyanpur contributed a lot to the Indian music industry. A while ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi penned a note, mourning the legendary singer's demise.

Through his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Prime Minister of India wrote, "Anguished by the passing of the popular singer Suman Kalyanpur Ji. Her melodious voice and soulful renditions enriched our cultural world." He also stated that Suman Kalyanpur created a special place among music lovers and admirers of Indian cinema through her songs.
PM Modi further offered condolences to the late singer's family and admirers. For the unversed, the late legendary singer was honoured with Padma Bhushan award in 2023 for her achievements in the field of art. She was born on January 28, 1937. Later, in 1958, the singer got married to Mumbai-based businessman Ramanand Kalyanpur.In her music career, Kalyanpur crooned songs for various composers like Madan Mohan Kohli, SD Burman, N Datta, Hemant Kumar, Chitragupta, Naushad, Ghulam Mohammed, and others. She started her singing career with All India Radio i n 1952.

In a long note that he penned on X, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis remembered Suman Kalyanpur as someone who had a sweet and melodious voice. He mentioned that in Marathi that 89-year-old ruled hears of music lovers in her six-decade-long career.
"Her immortal melodies in languages such as Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Odia, and others remain an invaluable treasure of the music world. Honored with the 'Padma Bhushan' award, Sumanji enriched Indian music with her magical voice," said CM of Maharashtra. He further stated that the emotive expression and sweetness in her songs will linger in everyone's memories. CM Devendra Fadnavis also said that Kalyanpur death is a profound loss to the music world.That said, Suman Kalyanpur is survived by her daughter Charul Agny and granddaughter Aaishanni Agny. Her granddaughter opened an NGO in Sumanji's name in Mumbai. May the veteran singer's soul rest in peace!
